The Ursuline church in Sopron: a neo-gothic beauty

A scenic walk down Church Street

Walking down Templom utca in the heart of Sopron is a delightful experience. The quiet street is lined with colourful old buildings and classic cobbled paving. As you stroll along your eyes are naturally drawn to the very end of the road.

Standing proudly where the street meets Orsolya tér is a striking church. It frames the view so perfectly that you almost feel like a set designer placed it there on purpose. It is one of the most photographed corners in the entire city and for very good reason.

Austrian design in a Hungarian town

This eye catching building is the Ursuline Church also known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception. In Hungarian the local residents simply refer to it as Orsolyita templom. It is a Roman Catholic church built between 1862 and 1864.

The leaders of the town hired a Viennese architect named Nándor Schiller to design the structure. He brought a dramatic Neo-Gothic style that stands out from the surrounding Baroque architecture.

A tower made for postcards

The facade of the church is packed with fine architectural details. Right above the entrance sits a large pointed arch window filled with beautiful stained glass. The stone carving around the front is remarkably delicate and ornate.

The real star of the show is the slender octagonal bell tower rising above the roofline. The openwork stone design lets the sky shine right through the upper section. A classic stone cross sits right on top to complete the dramatic look. It is an exquisite piece of stonework that makes modern concrete look rather boring.

More than just a pretty facade

The church is not just a standalone monument for tourists to admire. It forms the centerpiece of a much larger historical complex. The surrounding buildings belonged to the convent and school of the Ursuline Nuns.

This complex played a major role in local education for centuries. It completely defines the southern boundary of the Old Town. Today it remains a peaceful monument to detailed craftsmanship and clever urban planning.
