The Great June Makeover
If you’ve ever walked past a hortenzia bush in late June and thought, “Wasn’t that green yesterday?”, you’re not imagining things. In Luxembourg, these leafy drama queens start their annual transformation just as summer kicks in. One moment they’re all shy and green, the next they’re flaunting pink petals like they’ve just discovered Instagram filters.
Mood Rings with Petals
Hortenzias, or hydrangeas if you want to sound fancy, are the floral equivalent of mood rings. Their colour depends on the soil’s pH. Acidic soil gives you blue or purple flowers. Alkaline soil? Think pink. Luxembourg’s soil leans towards the latter, so by the end of June, gardens and parks start looking like a pastel explosion.
Bloom Timing: A Regional Rollercoaster
The timing is quite specific. While other countries might see their hortenzias bloom earlier, Luxembourg’s cooler spring means the real show doesn’t start until late June. In southern France or parts of Italy, the pink parade can begin as early as May. Meanwhile, in the UK, the blooms often wait until July. Clearly, hortenzias are not ones to be rushed. They like to make an entrance. Preferably with applause.
A Climate Made for Petal Drama
Luxembourg’s climate is ideal for these plants. Mild temperatures, decent rainfall and a general lack of extreme weather tantrums mean hortenzias can thrive for decades. Some bushes have been around longer than your favourite pair of jeans. And they age better too.
Beauty with Zero Responsibility
The flowers themselves are mostly made up of sterile florets. That’s right. All that beauty and not a single seed. It’s like nature’s version of a supermodel. All show, no reproduction. But we love them anyway.
