A bit of history: the stubborn mayor of Sopron in Hungary

Childhood and Early Life

Sopronyi Thurner Mihály was born in 1878 in a small village in today’s Austria. He grew up in a large family and spoke German as a child. As a teenager he learned Hungarian and quickly embraced it as his identity. He studied law and became a doctor of law, which opened the door to a career in public administration.

Becoming Mayor

In 1918, after the First World War, Hungary was in chaos. Sopron, a city close to the border, needed a strong leader. Thurner was chosen as mayor at the age of forty. He was known for his financial skills and calm approach. His biggest challenge came after the Treaty of Trianon, when Hungary lost large parts of its territory. Sopron itself faced the risk of being annexed to Austria. Thanks to a referendum in 1921, the city remained Hungarian, and Thurner played a key role in this outcome.

His Style as Mayor

Thurner was not a flamboyant politician. He was practical, stubborn, and sometimes too fond of paperwork. He worked to improve housing, utilities, schools, and culture. Sopron became known as a centre of education and tourism during his time. Critics said he was too cautious, but he kept the city stable when everything around it was unstable.

Later Years and Death

He stepped down in 1941 and was honoured as a citizen. Political changes later stripped him of that title. By the early 1950s he was living modestly and even applied for a job as a street sweeper. He died in 1952 at the age of 73.

The Statue and Legacy

In front of Sopron’s city hall stands his statue. It is a reminder of the man who guided the city through wars, treaties, and political storms. He was not a hero in shining armour but a mayor who did the hard work. His legacy is a city that survived and even grew when many thought it would collapse.

Remembering him

On 7 April 2026 Sopron will mark the 74th anniversary of his death. It is a good moment to remember a mayor who was not glamorous but who kept the city alive. Sopronyi Thurner Mihály deserves his place in front of city hall. He may not have been perfect but he was loyal, practical and stubborn enough to make sure Sopron did not sink.
