The name stamped onto the school gates belongs to a nineteenth-century French scientist and politician. Paul Bert was a pioneer in physiology and spent a lot of his time studying how pressure affects the human body. He is famously known as the father of aviation medicine because he figured out how dangerous it is to breathe thin air at high altitudes.

His connection to the actual city of Arcachon comes through his scientific research rather than a love for sunbathing. He spent time working at the local marine biology station which was a major hub for scientific discoveries at the time.

He was also a fiercely political figure who fought hard to make French education completely free and strictly secular. The local council thought it would be a brilliant idea to honour him by naming their grand new primary school.
