Standing on top of the local icon
Climbing the stairs of the Fire Tower in Sopron is a mandatory tourist activity. The view from the top makes the endless steps totally worth the effort. Looking south over the town gives you a perfect vantage point over the red roofs.
The entire historic center spreads out below your feet like a colourful medieval map. It is the best place to admire the town before you go back down to search for local wine. The perspective from the balcony lets you see how the city developed over many centuries.
The famous Goat Church and its royal past
Right below on the right side of the main square sits the famous Goat Church. This beautiful Gothic structure features a remarkably detailed openwork stone spire. It also has sharp pointed windows that make it stand out immediately.
Despite its slightly silly name this place carries serious historic weight. It hosted several royal coronations and important parliamentary meetings over the centuries. Monks prayed here while kings were crowned in front of noble crowds. Today it mostly copes with tourists taking endless photos of its impressive tower.
The main square and historic townhouses
Directly surrounding the Goat Church lies the famous cobblestone plaza known as Fő tér. This square serves as the bustling heart of the old city center. Beautiful historic townhouses wrap around the open space in soft pastel shades.
The yellow corner building complex stands out with its grand facade. It houses the famous Fabricius and Storno houses where noble families once lived. The square looks like a movie set for a historical drama. Walking across those ancient cobblestones is a delight until you try doing it in high heels.
Towers along church street and distant hills
Behind the main square the famous Templom utca (Church street) stretches south through the Old Town. Rising above the uniform sea of red tiled roofs you can spot several slender church towers. The Ursuline Church and Saint Michael Church poke their sharp spires into the sky.
In the far background the lush green Sopron Hills frame the entire panoramic image. You can even spot the tall TV tower standing proudly along the ridge line. It provides a striking modern contrast to the medieval town below. The mix of ancient stone and green nature makes for an unforgettable view.
