The bus that could (almost)
Biarritz is known for its waves, its charm and now, its pint-sized electric buses. Line 23 is served by what can only be described as a glorified toaster on wheels. These buses are so small, you half expect them to come with a remote control and a warning not to leave them near toddlers.
They’re electric, which is lovely for the environment and your ears. You won’t hear them coming, which is great until you realise you’re standing in the middle of the road taking selfies.
Roundabouts: The ultimate test
Now, let’s talk about roundabouts. Biarritz has plenty of them. And watching one of these tiny buses attempt to navigate a roundabout is like watching a penguin try to do ballet. It’s adorable, slightly wobbly and you’re never quite sure if it’s going to make it.
The buses lean into turns like they’re auditioning for a role in a Fast & Furious spin-off. Except instead of Vin Diesel, you’ve got a retired schoolteacher behind the wheel and a top speed of 25 km/h.
Size matters (but not always)
These buses are small. Really small. They look like they were designed for a theme park, not a functioning city. If you’re over six feet tall, prepare to fold yourself like a deckchair. And if you’re carrying shopping bags, good luck. You’ll either have to cuddle them or leave them behind.
But let’s be fair. Their size does have perks. They can squeeze through narrow streets where normal buses would get stuck or cause a diplomatic incident. They’re also easier to park, which is a miracle in Biarritz where parking is more elusive than a sunny day in November.
Charm over comfort
Despite their quirks, these little electric buses have a certain charm. They’re like the underdog of public transport. You want to root for them. You want them to succeed. Even when they’re teetering through a roundabout like a tipsy flamingo, you can’t help but smile.
They’re not perfect. They’re not fast. And they definitely don’t feel like they’re glued to the road. But they’re trying. And in a world full of noisy, polluting monsters, that counts for something.
