The idea behind GridX
GridX is the latest addition to Luxembourg’s growing collection of places where people can shop, eat and be entertained. It presents itself as a modern hub that mixes retail, events and lifestyle. The concept is simple. Bring everything together under one roof and hope that people will stay long enough to spend money in several different ways. It is a familiar idea but Luxembourg likes to give familiar ideas a premium finish.
The investment and the investor
The project did not appear out of thin air. It required a serious amount of money. The investment reached several hundred million euros which is the kind of figure that makes you blink twice. The investor behind it is a major real estate group that clearly believes in the long term potential of the country. Luxembourg has a reputation for stability and deep pockets so it is not surprising that developers feel confident enough to build something this large.
Why someone thought this was a good idea
The rationale is easy to understand. Luxembourg has a high income population and a steady flow of cross border workers. People like convenience and they like shiny new places. A centre that combines shops, restaurants and events can attract families, office workers and anyone who enjoys a bit of indoor entertainment. The country also loves cars more than it likes to admit so a project with generous parking and a real car exhibition inside is almost guaranteed to get attention.
Still some doubts about the future
I must confess that I have a few doubts about the long term viability of the whole thing. Luxembourg is small and the competition for attention is strong. People here travel easily to neighbouring countries for shopping and entertainment. The market is not endless and new centres sometimes struggle to stay exciting after the initial buzz fades.
Still the car friendly aspect may save the day. Luxembourg residents adore the comfort of driving directly to the entrance of anything. If GridX manages to offer enough convenience and enough reasons to return it might just work.
The country has surprised us before with projects that looked overly ambitious at first and then became part of daily life. We will see how it evolves in the coming years.
