A tiny airport with big ambitions

Podgorica Airport is the main way to fly into Montenegro but it is very modest. In 2024 it handled approximately 1,600,000 passengers. This was a busy year for the capital as the combined traffic for both Montenegrin airports reached 2,872,000 people. While these figures are impressive for a country of 630,000 people they are tiny when you look at the rest of the world.

Looking at the neighbours

If you hop over the border to Serbia you will see a much bigger operation. Belgrade Airport served 8,360,000 passengers in 2024. That is more than 5 times the traffic of Podgorica. Even Tirana Airport in Albania has become a regional monster welcoming over 10,700,000 passengers in 2024. In the Western Balkans Podgorica is clearly the smaller sibling barely keeping up with Pristina which handled 4,080,000 passengers or Skopje with its 2,950,000 travellers.

Small numbers in a vast Europe

When you compare Podgorica to the major hubs of Europe the figures become almost funny. London Heathrow welcomed 83,900,000 passengers in 2024. This means Heathrow handles more people in one week than Podgorica handles in an entire year. Even smaller European capital airports like Ljubljana in Slovenia which saw 1,400,000 passengers are closer in scale though they still feel more connected to the global network.

Capacity and the crowded terminal

The terminal in Podgorica was originally built to manage about 1,000,000 passengers per year. Because the airport now sees 1,600,000 people it can feel very tight during the summer. It is like trying to host a massive party in a small living room. There are only 8 check-in desks and a few gates so you will never get lost. You can walk from the entrance to the plane in less time than it takes to find a parking spot at a larger airport.

Tiny but very efficient

The beauty of such a small airport is the speed. You do not need to arrive 3 hours early because there are no long train rides between terminals. With only 1 runway and a handful of daily flights to places like Vienna or Istanbul everything is simple. It might not have 100 shops or a fancy lounge but it gets you to the beach or the mountains without any drama. It is a tiny airport that knows exactly what it is.
