A bit of peace and quiet
Trier is the oldest city in Germany. It has a lot of big Roman ruins. The cathedral is also very old and very large. It looks a bit like a fortress from the outside. If you want to escape the noise of the city you should head inside. You need to find the cloister. It is a hidden gem tucked away in the back.
A gothic corridor for quiet walks
The cloistered courtyard was built in the thirteenth century. It was created in the Gothic style. This means it has a lot of pointy arches and fancy stonework. It connects the main cathedral to the Church of Our Lady next door. People used to walk here to pray or just to get away from the rain. It is very atmospheric and feels a bit like a movie set.
The garden of the dead
In the middle of the walkways you will find an interior garden. It is very green and very tidy. This is a very German garden. However it is not just a place for flowers. It is actually a cemetery for the cathedral officials. It is a very polite place to be buried. The graves are neatly arranged and the grass is perfectly cut.
Watching the walls
The walls of the cloister are covered in old stones and monuments. Some of these stones have been there for hundreds of years. They tell the long history of the church. You can see the different styles of building from over the centuries. It is a bit like a giant jigsaw puzzle made of rocks. Some parts are Roman and some are much newer.
