The Spanish name is more straightforward and keeps the reference to the saint. Locals switch between the two names depending on the situation. Visitors usually pick one and hope for the best.

San Sebastián is part of the Basque Country which is an autonomous community in northern Spain. The region has its own language, its own traditions and a strong sense of identity.
