A confusing geographical identity
The Plage du Petit Nice sits tucked away between La Teste-de-Buch and Arcachon on the Atlantic coast. The name translates to the little Nice beach. This is somewhat confusing because the real city of Nice is hundreds of kilometres away on the completely different Mediterranean sea.
Presumably the local tourism board wanted to steal some of the glamorous reputation of the French Riviera. The joke is on them because this Atlantic version is actually much better. Instead of the hard pebbles of the Mediterranean you get proper soft sand beneath your feet.
Beautiful even when the weather disagrees
The beach is famous for its amazing natural beauty. Many people think you need perfect blue skies to enjoy the seaside but this location proves them wrong. The landscape looks spectacular even when a thick layer of grey clouds decides to roll in from the ocean.
The moody grey weather actually gives the place a very dramatic and romantic atmosphere. The dark water contrasts beautifully with the bright sand. It feels wild and poetic. It is the perfect setting for a long walk if you do not mind getting your hair ruined by the salty maritime wind.
Where the forest meets the ocean
The most striking feature of the Plage du Petit Nice is the vegetation. Massive tall pine trees grow right up to the edge of the sand. They look like giant green guards watching over the Atlantic ocean.
These maritime pines are not just there to look pretty in your holiday photos. They smell incredible and provide a very welcome shield against the strong sea breeze. You can easily find a spot where you can hear the waves crashing while sitting comfortably under the shade of a tree.
Civilised survival in the wilderness
You might expect a wild Atlantic beach to be completely empty of comfort. Fortunately the local authorities have installed a very good infrastructure network. You do not have to behave like a primitive castaway here.
There are clean public toilets and well-maintained picnic areas hidden among the trees. The real highlight is the local restaurant situated right by the sand. You can walk straight from the water into a proper dining room to enjoy fresh seafood or a cold drink. It is an excellent setup for people who like nature but also like their home comforts.
