What About Living in a Water Tower?

The Water Tower (Víztorony) is one of the most iconic landmarks of the Margaret Island (Margitsziget) in Budapest. a green oasis in the middle of the Danube river.

It was built in 1911 in Art Nouveau style, and today it serves as an exhibition hall. In the past, the upper floor was the home for a few lucky residents.

The Water Tower has 10 floors and a total height of 57 meters. It could store up to 1,000 cubic meters of water, which supplied the island’s hotels, restaurants, and fountains. It also offers a stunning 360-degree view of the city, the bridges, and the hills.

But what made the Water Tower truly unique is that it was converted into a residential building, with 8 apartments on the upper floors. The apartments were rented out by the city council to selected tenants, who paid a symbolic fee.

Today, the Water Tower is a cultural and historical attraction. It hosts various exhibitions and events throughout the year, and it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Banks of the Danube.
