A Town Made for Walking

Echternach, the oldest town in Luxembourg, is perfect for walking. The centre is a pedestrian zone with cobbled streets, small shops and cosy cafés. The main shopping street, Halergaass, is full of life in the warmer months, with locals and tourists enjoying the relaxed vibe.

The streets are narrow and peaceful, with colourful houses and plenty of old buildings to admire. You don’t need a car—just good shoes and a bit of curiosity.

History Everywhere You Look

Echternach has a long story. It was started over 1,300 years ago by a monk named Saint Willibrord, who built a big abbey here. You can still visit the beautiful church and abbey buildings today.

The old town also has a medieval wall, a small palace called the Dënzelt, and a lovely town hall in the main square. These places help you feel the history all around.

Summer Fun in the Streets

In summer, the town feels alive. There are outdoor concerts, markets and events. People sit outside, enjoying the sunshine and a cool drink. Musicians sometimes play in the streets, and everyone seems to be smiling.

One special event is the Dancing Procession in June. It’s a tradition that goes back hundreds of years and brings lots of visitors from other countries. People dance through the streets to honour Saint Willibrord. It’s both unusual and joyful.
