Volendam is considered to be the most popular fishing village in the Netherlands. Beautifully located on the Markermeer lake, which is part of the former Zuiderzee, a large inland sea that was separated from the North Sea by a huge dam in 1932.
Volendam has a beautiful harbour, where you can see old fishing boats and enjoy fresh fish at the restaurants. The harbour is also the departure point for the Volendam Marken Express, a boat service that takes you to the nearby island of Marken, where you can visit the wooden shoe factory and see the traditional houses on stilts.
