The Wild Side of the Concrete Jungle

Escape the Gare… if you can

The Gare area of Luxembourg City does not exactly scream charm. It is more of a whisper. A slightly grumpy one. Between concrete blocks, honking traffic, endless renovations and all sorts of security problems, it is not the place you’d take someone to impress them. Unless they are into gritty urban realism. Then go wild.

And yet, just behind this urban sprawl, something a bit magical happens. You step off a random side street and suddenly you are in a different world. One with trees. Birds. Possibly even a squirrel or two doing very Luxembourgish things. It is the kind of shift that makes you blink and wonder if you took a wrong turn into a travel brochure.

Surprisingly scenic backdrops

While you are gazing at this unexpected greenery, you might notice something large and glassy peeking through the trees. That would be the headquarters of BIL Bank.

It is a rather delightful contradiction. Nature doing its soothing thing while capitalism politely looms nearby. A real-life metaphor, if you are in the mood for that kind of thinking.

The joy of contrast

This odd little pocket of Luxembourg manages to be both drab and delightful at the same time. It is urban grit with a side of fresh air. And that, in a nutshell, is the beauty of wandering without purpose. One minute you are dodging scaffolding. The next, you are contemplating ducks while a banker checks stock prices behind tinted glass.

So yes, the Gare area is not everyone’s cup of tea. But give it a chance and it might surprise you. Just do not forget to look up. Or down. Or generally anywhere besides the pavement. That is where the real stuff is happening.
