The white seal ambulance of Stellendam: Rescuing Dutch wildlife in style

A very specific mission on four wheels

If you spot a specialized white vehicle cruising along the beaches near Stellendam, it is not just a standard utility van. This dedicated car has one very specific job. It is an official wildlife ambulance built to transport sick, injured, or orphaned seals.

Operated by the A Seal foundation, this vehicle is equipped to transport heavy marine mammals safely. Inside, there is plenty of room for secure transport crates and specialized rescue equipment. It serves as a vital lifeline for marine wildlife across the southern coast of the Netherlands.

The birth of the Stellendam seal sanctuary

The A Seal foundation was founded in 2014 to fill a major gap in coastal animal care. For decades, seal rehabilitation in the Netherlands was heavily concentrated in the far north of the country. However, thousands of harbor and grey seals live in the waters surrounding Zeeland and South Holland.

Local conservationists realized that driving sick animals hours up north was causing unnecessary stress to fragile wildlife. Stellendam was chosen as the perfect location for a new regional rescue centre. Situated right near the Haringvliet sluices and the open sea, it allowed rescuers to reach stranded animals quickly.

Dial 144 to save a seal

The day to day functioning of A Seal relies on a well organized emergency response system. When members of the public spot a seal that looks weak, injured, or stranded on a beach, they can dial a short national emergency number. Calling 144 connects callers directly to the central animal protection hotline.

Trained seal watchers are dispatched to observe the animal before rushing in. Pups are often just resting, so experts monitor them for up to 24 hours to ensure they are actually abandoned. If the seal truly needs medical help, the white transport car steps in to bring the patient to the sanctuary.

Healing, feeding and heading back to the sea

Once inside the Stellendam facility, the seal undergoes a careful multi step medical recovery plan. New arrivals spend their first three weeks in quarantine to prevent the spread of wild viruses. Vets administer medicine, treat wounds, and feed young pups liquid fish porridge until they gain strength.

As the animals recover, they move to outdoor pools where they learn to catch live fish and interact with other seals. A Seal operates strictly as a temporary hospital rather than a permanent zoo. The moment a seal reaches a healthy weight and recovers fully, it is taken back to local beaches like Ouddorp and set free.

How the seal hospital keeps the lights on

Running a professional seal hospital with heated pools and medical equipment is an expensive business. The Stichting A Seal operates as a non profit foundation that relies heavily on public goodwill. They do not receive unlimited government funding, so keeping the doors open requires clever financing.

Money comes from a mixture of entry tickets to their visitor center, corporate sponsorships, and private donations. Animal lovers can even symbolically adopt an individual seal to cover its fish and medical bills. Thanks to this community support, the white seal ambulance can keep rolling down the beach whenever a seal needs help.
