In the world of automotive innovation, the NSU Degen 1200 stands as a singular testament to creativity and engineering brilliance. This one-of-a-kind vehicle, built in 1973 by Erich Degen, blends the allure of Italian style with Austrian craftsmanship, resulting in a car that is both visually striking and mechanically impressive.
The Visionary Behind the Vehicle
Erich Degen, a visionary tinkerer from Vienna, was captivated by the design of the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 “Daytona” upon its release in 1970. Inspired by its aesthetic, Degen embarked on an ambitious project to create his own custom vehicle on an NSU Prinz base. His goal was to infuse his creation with stylistic elements reminiscent of the iconic Ferrari, all while maintaining the functional integrity of the NSU’s rear-engine layout.
A Blend of Styles and Elements
The NSU Degen 1200 features a sleek front end with concealed headlights covered by Plexiglas, a design choice that echoes the aerodynamic lines of the Ferrari. The vehicle incorporates the rear window of an Opel Rekord Coupé as its windscreen and utilises the roof from a Fiat 1800 as its bonnet. This innovative amalgamation of parts results in a high rear end with a large, gently sloping window, a design that was considered particularly sporty at the time.
Engineering Prowess
At the heart of the NSU Degen is a reworked 1200cc NSU inline-four engine, equipped with two Weber double carburettors and open intake funnels, delivering over 105 horsepower. The vehicle, featuring a four-speed manual transmission, reaches a top speed of 180 km/h. Despite the substantial modifications, Degen retained some original elements of the NSU Prinz, such as part of the rear bodywork.
Handmade Craftsmanship
Much of the NSU Degen’s bodywork, including the front fenders, doors, and roof, was handcrafted from steel. This meticulous attention to detail reflects Degen’s dedication to merging functionality with aesthetics, culminating in a vehicle that is not only unique but also expertly engineered.
A Legacy of Innovation
The NSU Degen 1200 remains a singular piece in automotive history, with only one unit ever produced. It exemplifies the spirit of ingenuity and the enduring appeal of bespoke craftsmanship, resonating particularly with those who appreciate the fusion of art and engineering.
