A View Across Borders  

Standing proudly in the Lővérek Hills of Sopron, the Károlyi Lookout Tower offers one of the most magnificent panoramic views in western Hungary. Sopron itself is located near the Austrian border, making this vantage point especially remarkable: on clear days, visitors can see across into Austria, admiring the rolling hills and distant settlements beyond the frontier.  

Fertő Lake: A Unique Natural Gem  

From the tower’s summit, visitors also enjoy a stunning view of Fertő Lake, known as Neusiedler See in Austria. This remarkable lake, covering an area of about 315 km², is shared between Hungary and Austria, with roughly two-thirds belonging to Hungary and the remaining one-third to Austria. It is Europe’s second-largest steppe lake, characterised by its shallow depth, rarely exceeding 1 metre.  

Fertő Lake is an ecological treasure, home to a vast expanse of reed beds, which create an ideal habitat for over 300 species of birds. Its unique hydrology—where water levels fluctuate based on precipitation and evaporation—has shaped the surrounding biodiversity, earning it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The view from Károlyi Lookout Tower is more than just a scenic delight; it tells the story of a historic region shaped by natural beauty and cross-border connections. Fertő Lake has long served as a link between Hungarian and Austrian cultures, fostering tourism, trade, and ecological collaboration.
