The great Atlantic light show

A brutal winter wake up call

Unfortunately the ocean recently decided to remind the local authorities that sand dunes are not permanent foundations for heavy concrete. This past winter a spectacular collapse occurred along the front when a massive storm combined with high tides and heavy rain. A huge section of the elevated pedestrian promenade simply slid down into the sea during the night.

The local residents woke up to find a neat slice of municipal asphalt hanging over the empty beach like a broken biscuit. Over twenty metres of the coastal pathway vanished into the Atlantic in a matter of hours. The town council immediately had to close the beach access points and scramble to dump emergency sand against the remaining cliffs. It turns out that building luxury viewing spots on top of shifting sand has some predictable design flaws.

The fragile beauty of the moving sand

This dramatic coastal collapse has certainly added a touch of survival excitement to the evening stroll. Visitors can still enjoy the stunning red sunsets but they now have to do it while standing behind bright plastic safety barriers. The contrast between the beautiful natural sky and the crumbling infrastructure is a great reminder of coastal reality.
