The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest: a Place for Art Lovers

The Szépművészeti Múzeum, or the Museum of Fine Arts, is one of the most prestigious and impressive museums in Budapest, Hungary. It is located in the Heroes’ Square, facing the Palace of Art, and it was built between 1900 and 1906 in an eclectic-neoclassical style.

The museum’s collection consists of more than 100,000 pieces of international art, ranging from ancient Egypt to the 18th century. Some of the highlights of the collection include the second largest collection of Egyptian art in central Europe, the Esterhazy Madonna by Raphael, the St John the Baptist Preaching by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and the Mucius Scaevola Before Porsenna by Rubens.

The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions of internationally renowned artists, such as Renoir, Botticelli, Titian, and others. Currently, the museum is presenting the exhibition “Renoir – The Painter and His Models”, which showcases more than 70 paintings by the French impressionist master, focusing on his portraits of women and his exploration of femininity. The exhibition runs until January 21, 2024, and it is a unique opportunity to admire in Budapest some of Renoir’s most famous and beautiful works, such as The Swing, The Luncheon of the Boating Party, and The Bathers.
