The Maquisards of Luxembourg: A Tribute to Resistance and Freedom

In the centre of the southern city of Esch-sur-Alzette in Luxembourg, a poignant statue stands as a solemn tribute to the brave souls who fought against oppression during one of history’s darkest times. The French inscription reads:

“HONOUR TO THE LUXEMBOURG MAQUISARDS 1940-1945 REFUSING SERVITUDE THEY FOUGHT ALONGSIDE THE ALLIES TO RESTORE FREEDOM, DIGNITY, AND INDEPENDENCE TO OUR HOMELAND.”

The Maquisards: Defenders of Liberty

The term ‘Maquisards’ refers to the members of the armed resistance groups, known as the Maquis, who played a pivotal role in the underground fight against the Axis powers during World War II. In Luxembourg, these resistance fighters, refusing to bow down to the servitude imposed by the occupying forces, took a courageous stand to fight for their country’s freedom.

A Statue of Remembrance

Located to the left of the entrance to the National Resistance Museum in Esch-sur-Alzette, the monument to the Maquisards serves as a constant reminder of their valour. It is a symbol of the indomitable spirit of those who risked everything for the sake of their nation’s future.

The Struggle for Independence

Between 1940 and 1945, Luxembourg was under the shadow of occupation. The Maquisards, refusing to accept this fate, engaged in covert operations, sabotage, and direct combat alongside the Allied forces. Their actions were instrumental in undermining the enemy and paving the way for the liberation of Luxembourg.
