A Name That Raises Eyebrows
Strasbourg is full of charming corners and cobbled lanes, but few are as delightfully odd as Rue du Tonnelet Rouge. Or, if you prefer your street names with a German twist, Rotfässelgässel.
The name translates to “Little Red Barrel Lane”, which immediately raises questions. Why red? Why small? And why a barrel? Was someone storing wine in suspiciously tiny quantities?
The Tavern That Started It All
Legend has it that the name comes from a tavern that once stood there, proudly displaying a red barrel as its sign. Because nothing says “come in and drink” like a painted wooden container. The tavern is long gone, of course, probably replaced by a boutique selling overpriced scarves or artisanal cheese. But the name stuck, and now the street enjoys a kind of fame that only comes from sounding like a cartoon alley.
A Lane With Personality
The lane itself is narrow, winding, and slightly claustrophobic. It’s the kind of place where you expect to bump into a medieval ghost or at least a confused tourist clutching a map. Locals mostly ignore it, unless they’re trying to avoid the crowds or impress someone with their knowledge of obscure street names.
There’s a rumour that the red barrel was once used to signal a secret society meeting. Or maybe it was just a clever way to mark the spot where the wine was strongest and the gossip was juiciest. Either way, it’s got more personality than half the boulevards in town.
