The Giant Tree of Luxembourg’s Christmas Market

A tree that owns the square

Every year the Place de la Constitution gets a new centrepiece. A massive Christmas tree rises above the market stalls and makes sure nobody forgets what season it is. It is tall, proud and covered in lights. The tree is the kind of decoration that makes smaller trees look embarrassed.

Where it comes from

The tree is not grown in the middle of Luxembourg City. It usually comes from the forests of the country or sometimes from neighbouring regions. Selected with care, it is chosen for its size and shape. In other words, it is the supermodel of trees.

The size of the spectacle

The Christmas tree is huge. It often reaches more than ten metres in height. Once decorated it looks even bigger. People standing next to it appear like tiny ornaments. It is the kind of size that makes you wonder how anyone thought this was practical.

How it is delivered

Getting the tree to the square is a small adventure. It is cut, loaded onto a truck and carefully transported through the city. Streets are blocked, traffic is annoyed and pedestrians stare. When it finally arrives, cranes lift it into place. It is a logistical ballet performed every December.

A longstanding tradition

The tradition of putting a Christmas tree at the Place de la Constitution has been around for decades. It has become part of the festive identity of Luxembourg. Generations have walked past it, taken photos and complained about the cold while admiring the lights.

Somewhat controversial nowadays

Of course one could argue that dragging a giant tree into the city every year is not the most eco-friendly idea. It is festive but also a bit wasteful. Still, people love it. The lights, the size and the tradition win every time.
