The socialist block houses, or “panellakás” in Hungarian, are not really famous for their beauty.
They were a pragmatic solution to an acute housing problem after World War II. In the old socialist bloc, they offered quality home for millions of people. Today, about 3.9 million people, or 40% of the population, live in such buildings in Hungary.
However, the golden hour of photography may bring some indisputable charm even to these buildings. The warm and soft light creates a contrast with the cold and hard concrete, and highlights the shapes and textures of the architecture.
