Snow in Maastricht
Snow in the Netherlands is like spotting a unicorn. It happens, but not often, and usually not for long. When Dormio Park in Maastricht woke up under a white blanket around New Year it felt like the weather had decided to give the country a surprise gift. The trees looked softer. The paths looked cleaner. Even the holiday homes looked like they had been upgraded for a festive photoshoot.
People wandered around with the same expression you see in museums. A mix of admiration and disbelief. It was as if the snow might melt the moment anyone breathed too loudly.
Why the Dutch are not built for snow
The Dutch love to talk about the weather. They do it with passion. Yet the moment snow appears the country behaves as if it has never seen frozen water before. The national mood shifts from cheerful to confused in record time.
The main issue is simple. The Netherlands is prepared for rain. Endless rain. Biblical rain. But snow is a different story. It arrives quietly and suddenly everything stops working. Trains slow down. Roads become slippery. People start to panic in a polite Dutch way. The fact that it happened during the holiday period only added to the drama.
Bikers in survival mode
The Dutch are proud of their bikes. They ride them in storms. They ride them while carrying shopping bags. They ride them while holding an umbrella and a child and sometimes a dog. But snow is their natural enemy.
The moment snow hits the ground bikers turn into cautious penguins. They wobble. They slide. They pray. Some try to cycle as usual and quickly regret their optimism. Others walk next to their bikes with the dignity of someone who has accepted defeat. Around New Year this spectacle was even more entertaining because everyone was still full of festive confidence.
Cars that forget how to behave
Cars do not handle snow much better. Dutch drivers are used to wet roads but not icy ones. A thin layer of snow is enough to confuse even the most confident driver. You see cars moving at the speed of a sleepy snail. You see wheels spinning without purpose. You see drivers staring ahead with the concentration of a surgeon.
Roundabouts become comedy stages. Everyone enters slowly. Everyone exits slowly. Everyone hopes for the best. The holiday traffic did not help either.
Snow may not be the Dutch speciality but it certainly gives the country character for a day.
