Saints, Chocolate and Onion Domes: Bludenz’s Old Town Surprises

The Nepomukbrunnen: gossip-proof since 1730

Right in the centre of Bludenz’s old town stands the Nepomukbrunnen. It is not just a fountain. It is a stone statement against slander. Built in 1730, it features Saint John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of not spilling secrets. If you have a tendency to gossip, maybe don’t linger too long near it.

The statue was crafted by Johann Ladner, an Austrian sculptor who clearly had a thing for saints with strong opinions. The fountain is charming, slightly dramatic, and oddly reassuring. It is like a moral compass with running water.

Strolling through the old town

Bludenz’s old town is not enormous, but it packs a punch. Narrow alleyways, arcades, and pastel buildings give it a Mediterranean feel, even though you are firmly in the Alps. There are over 100 shops and boutiques, which is impressive for a town that could fit in your backpack.

Cafés spill out onto cobbled streets, and there is always someone selling flowers or cheese at the market. It is the kind of place where you can buy a handmade candle, a slice of cake, and a pair of socks without walking more than ten metres.

The church with the onion dome

High above the town sits St. Lawrence’s Church. It has an onion dome that looks like it belongs on a fancy cake. The church dates back centuries and has bells so old they survived both World Wars. You can reach it via a covered staircase, which feels very medieval and slightly mysterious.

From the top, you get a view of the whole town and the surrounding valleys. It is peaceful, photogenic, and mildly exhausting if you forgot to stretch.

Schloss Gayenhofen: a castle with curves

Not far from the church is Schloss Gayenhofen. It is a baroque castle that looks like it was designed by someone who really liked symmetry and drama. You cannot always go inside, but the exterior is worth a look. It is the kind of building that makes you wonder if you should have worn nicer shoes.

Chocolate and eyewear, obviously

Bludenz is home to the Milka factory outlet. Yes, that Milka. The purple cow lives here. You can buy chocolate in quantities that would alarm your dentist. There are also rare editions and seasonal treats. It is basically a shrine to sugar.
