Riding the Oldest Metro Line in Europe: Budapest’s M1

Did you know that Budapest has the oldest metro line in continental Europe? 🇭🇺

The M1 line, also known as the Millennium Underground, was opened in 1896 to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian state. It was the first electric underground railway in the world, after London.

The M1 line runs from Vörösmarty tér, the city center, to Mexikói út, near the City Park. It has 11 stations, each with its own unique style and history.

One of the most interesting stories is that the M1 line was originally drawn by horses during the first period of operation. The horses were kept in stables under the Opera House, and they pulled the carriages along the tracks. The horses were later replaced by electric locomotives, but the stables still exist today.

The M1 line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is still in use today. It is a great way to explore the city and its culture. You can see the original carriages and learn more about the history of the line at the Millennium Underground Museum, located at Deák Ferenc tér station.

If you are in Budapest, don’t miss the chance to ride the M1 line and experience a piece of history. It is a truly amazing and unique experience. blush
