The Point de vue de l’Impératrice
The Point de vue de l’Impératrice is one of the most beautiful spots in Biarritz. It sits proudly between the lighthouse and the Rocher de la Vierge, right at the top of Avenue de l’Impératrice. From here the view opens over the ocean, the cliffs and the long line of beaches stretching towards the Spanish border. The origin of the name
The name comes from Eugénie de Montijo, the last Empress of France and the wife of Napoleon III. She was born in Spain, educated in Paris and became Empress in 1853. She was known for her strong personality, her taste for fashion and her influence on politics. She also had a soft spot for Biarritz.
Eugénie and Napoleon III discovered the town in the nineteenth century and fell in love with it. They built a summer residence here, right where the viewpoint stands today. It was a grand villa that later became a hotel casino. Sadly it burned down in 1903 but the location kept its name and its charm.
The Empress spent many summers in Biarritz. She brought European aristocracy with her which transformed the town into a fashionable seaside resort. Without her Biarritz might still be a quiet fishing village. With her it became a glamorous destination.
A place shaped by history
The Point de vue de l’Impératrice is more than a pretty terrace. It is a reminder of the imperial couple who helped shape the identity of Biarritz. The Empress loved the dramatic coastline and the fresh Atlantic air. Napoleon III enjoyed the calm and the privacy. Together they turned the area into a royal retreat.
