A Capital Full of Green
Luxembourg City is not just the political and financial heart of the country, it’s also one of the greenest capitals in Europe. Around 30% of the city’s surface is made up of parks, gardens, forests and other green areas. From the Pétrusse Valley to the municipal park in Limpertsberg, nature is never far away.
The city has over 1,000 hectares of green space, offering locals and visitors places to walk, relax and enjoy fresh air. These areas also help reduce air pollution, cool the city in summer, and support local wildlife.
What Is Fauchage Tardif?
One of the ways Luxembourg supports nature is through a method called fauchage tardif, or late mowing. Instead of cutting grass early and often, the city lets it grow longer and only mows it once or twice a year. This gives wildflowers time to bloom and lets insects, birds and small animals thrive.
It might look a bit messy to some, but it’s a simple and effective way to boost biodiversity. The longer grass also helps the soil stay moist and reduces the need for watering.
Other Eco-Friendly Ideas
Luxembourg City also uses other smart ideas to stay green. For example:
- Green pavements and eco-friendly car parks let rainwater soak into the ground instead of running off into drains.
- No pesticides are used in public green spaces, helping protect bees and other pollinators.
- Tree planting is ongoing, with new trees added every year to improve air quality and provide shade.
Even pavements are being redesigned to include more space for plants and trees, making the city feel more natural and welcoming.
