In the charming city of Alkmaar, known for its vibrant cheese market, stands a bronze statue that captures the essence of local tradition and romance: the Kissing Cheesegirl. This endearing work of art is not just a tourist attraction but a symbol of the city’s rich cheesemaking heritage.
The statue was a generous gift from CONO Kaasmakers, the makers of the famous Beemster cheese. Designed by Gerard Velzeboer and crafted by Fabio Pravisani, the statue immortalizes the timeless art of cheesemaking that has been a cornerstone of Dutch culture for centuries
Local cheese-girl Denise van Dort served as the model for this sculpture, embodying the youthful spirit and dedication of Alkmaar’s cheese vendors. The statue was unveiled in July 2016, with Denise giving it the first kiss, a gesture that has since become a tradition for visitors.
Located at the crossroads of Houttil and Waagplein, right next to the Waag tower, the Kissing Cheesegirl statue invites passersby to partake in the local custom.
