A scenic shortcut with style
If you have ever wanted to float above a city like a very relaxed superhero, the cable car in Madeira is your chance. It connects the Monte district of Funchal to the island’s famous botanical gardens. And it does so with a level of grace that puts most public transport to shame.
It is a 1.6 kilometre journey through the sky, offering panoramic views of Funchal Bay, the Ribeira de João Gomes valley.
The tech behind the tranquillity
The cable car system is made up of 12 cabins, each seating up to 6 people. It glides along at a maximum speed of 15 kilometres per hour. Not exactly Formula 1, but that is the point. You are meant to enjoy the view, not race the clouds.
The ride takes about 9 minutes. Long enough to take 47 photos and wonder why you do not live here. The system is designed for stability and comfort, even if you are not a fan of heights. It is a single-cable system, which means fewer moving parts and more peace of mind. Unless you are the type who worries about everything. In which case, maybe just look straight ahead and breathe.
A bit of history
The idea of connecting Monte and the botanical gardens by cable car was part of a broader plan to make Madeira more accessible and, let’s be honest, more Instagrammable. Construction began in the late 1990s and the system was inaugurated in 2000. Since then, it has become one of the island’s most popular attractions. And not just because it saves you from walking uphill.
The route was chosen carefully to avoid disturbing the natural landscape. The result is a ride that feels like it belongs there. Like it grew out of the hillside along with the ferns and the occasional startled pigeon.
More than just a lift
At the Monte station, you can explore the Monte Palace Gardens or hop on one of those slightly terrifying wicker toboggans. At the botanical garden end, you are greeted by exotic plants, sweeping views, and the smug satisfaction of having arrived in style.
