Espelette: Where Peppers Parade and Tourists Roam

The charm of Espelette

Espelette is one of those villages that seems to have been designed by someone who really liked pretty things. Nestled in the French Basque Country, it’s small, picturesque and suspiciously perfect. The houses are white with red shutters, the streets are cobbled, and the whole place smells faintly of peppers and pastries.

The main pedestrian street is the beating heart of the village. It’s lined with shops selling everything from local cheese to pepper-infused chocolate. Yes, chocolate with chilli. Because why not ruin dessert with a surprise kick to the throat.

Tourists love it here. And they come in droves. In summer, the village is packed. You’ll find yourself dodging selfie sticks and overhearing at least five different languages while trying to buy a jar of spicy jam. It’s charming, but also slightly chaotic.

The pepper party

October is when things really heat up. That’s when Espelette hosts its famous Piment d’Espelette festival. It’s a celebration of the local chilli pepper that has somehow become a celebrity in its own right. The streets are decorated, music fills the air, and there’s more red than a tomato convention.

People come from all over to admire strings of drying peppers hanging from balconies like festive bunting. There are cooking demos, tastings, and a lot of people pretending they can handle spicy food. Spoiler: they can’t.

The festival is fun, colourful and slightly mad. It’s also a great excuse to eat too much and buy things you don’t need. Like pepper soap. Which exists. And yes, it smells exactly how you think it does.

Shops and streets

Espelette’s shops are small, friendly and full of temptation. You’ll find artisanal products, handmade crafts and enough pepper-themed souvenirs to fill a suitcase. There’s something oddly satisfying about buying a pepper-shaped fridge magnet in the place where the actual peppers grow.

The streets are narrow and winding, perfect for aimless wandering. The architecture is traditional Basque, with timber-framed houses and flower boxes that look like they’ve been curated by Instagram influencers. It’s all very photogenic. Almost suspiciously so.
