A village with flair
Espelette is one of those places that looks like it was designed by someone who really liked red. Red shutters, red roofs and, of course, red peppers hanging from the walls like festive bunting.
Located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region of south-west France, Espelette has a population of around 2,000 people. That’s small enough for everyone to know each other’s dog, but big enough to host a decent market.
The village centre is a postcard cliché in the best possible way. Cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with timber frames and balconies that seem to compete over who can hang the most peppers.
Why tourists love it
Espelette is famous for its pepper, yes, but it’s also a proper tourist magnet. People come for the atmosphere, the food and the feeling that they’ve stepped into a French film where nothing bad ever happens.
There are shops selling local products, from cheese to jam to pepper-themed everything. You can buy pepper soap, pepper chocolate and even pepper plush toys if you’re into that sort of thing.
The village also has a castle. Not a massive one, but enough to make you feel like you’re in medieval times. It hosts exhibitions and events, and gives you a nice view of the surrounding hills.
Festivals and flair
Espelette knows how to throw a party. The annual pepper festival in October is a big deal. The streets fill with stalls, music and people wearing red. It’s like a chilli-themed carnival with less fire breathing and more cheese tasting.
Even outside festival season, the village is lively. Hikers pass through, foodies linger and photographers try to capture the perfect pepper shot.
A place to relax
Despite the buzz, Espelette is not overwhelming. It’s peaceful, friendly and smells faintly of spice and fresh bread.
You can sit on a terrace, sip a local cider and watch the world go by. Or you can walk up the nearby hills and pretend you’re training for a pepper-themed Olympics.
Either way, Espelette offers a lovely break from the usual tourist traps. It’s authentic, colourful and just quirky enough to keep things interesting.
