A Special Building in the Town Square
The town hall of Echternach (called Hôtel de Ville in French) stands in the middle of the main square. It was built in the 1700s and replaced an older town hall that once stood just across the road. Only a small part of the old building, a stone loggia, is still there.
The building you see today has a balanced design with two outside staircases and a neat, simple style from the Baroque period. It looks proud and strong—just like the town’s long history.
A Tiny Town with a Big Story
Echternach is the oldest city in Luxembourg, even though it’s quite small, with only around 5,600 people. It started back in 698, when a monk from England, Saint Willibrord, founded a big abbey here. Over the years, the town became known for religion, art and music.
Even today, you can still feel the history all around—with its basilica, old walls, and buildings from the Middle Ages. Echternach is also famous for its Dancing Procession, which happens every year and is part of UNESCO’s list of traditions to protect.
Who Runs the Town?
The town is led by the Bürgermeister—that’s the mayor. He or she works in the town hall and is in charge of running things, from local events to keeping services running. In a close community like Echternach, the Bürgermeister also plays a big role in bringing people together and keeping the traditions alive.
Dates That Matter
- Before the 1700s: There was an older town hall across the street.
- 18th century: The current building was built with a new, elegant design.
- Today: The town hall is still used for official work and is part of what makes Echternach feel special.
The town hall is more than a building, it’s a symbol of Echternach.
