Dr. Francisco Fulgêncio Andrade: A Pillar of Madeira’s History

Dr. Francisco Fulgêncio Andrade (1889-1970) was a prominent figure in Madeira, known for his multifaceted contributions as a professor, preacher, and journalist. Born in Água de Pena, Madeira, he pursued his studies at the diocesan seminary in Funchal before attending the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he studied philosophy and theology. He was ordained in 1914 and returned to Madeira to serve his community.

As a canon of the Funchal Cathedral, Dr. Andrade was deeply involved in religious education and spiritual guidance. He taught theology at the seminary and later expanded his teachings to include humanities. His influence extended beyond the classroom as he became a well-respected journalist, writing for the Jornal da Madeira and hosting a popular radio program, “Cinco minutos de espiritualidade” (Five Minutes of Spirituality), where he shared his insights on faith and morality.

Dr. Andrade’s legacy is immortalized in a bronze bust located on the south side of the Funchal Cathedral (Sé). Created by sculptors Soares Branco and José Simão Castelo Branco in 1998, the statue stands as a testament to his enduring impact on the island’s cultural and spiritual life. The placement of his statue in front of the Cathedral is symbolic, reflecting his lifelong dedication to the church and the community he served.
