Discover the Historic Drachenfelsbahn Railway to Königswinter

The Drachenfelsbahn railway, known as the cogwheel railway, has been transporting passengers from Königswinter to the Drachenfels plateau since its inauguration on July 17, 1883.

This historic railway is the oldest operational rack railway in Germany, offering breathtaking views and a unique travel experience.

The railway operates daily from March to October, with trains running every 30 minutes. During the peak season, additional trains are added to accommodate the influx of visitors. The journey covers a distance of 1,520 meters, ascending 220 meters with a maximum gradient of 20%.

The railway uses the Riggenbach rack system, which involves cogwheels engaging with a toothed rack rail to climb steep gradients.

The Drachenfelsbahn is not only a means of transportation but also a cherished historical landmark. Over the years, it has transported millions of passengers, offering them a glimpse into the region’s rich history and natural beauty.

The railway continues to be a popular attraction, drawing visitors from around the world to experience its charm and heritage.
