A wheel with modest ambitions
The Budapest Eye on Erzsébet tér is not the biggest wheel in the world. It is not even the biggest in Europe. But it does its job with charm and a certain confidence that only a wheel in the middle of a busy square can have. It stands at about 65 metres which is tall enough to impress tourists and tall enough to make locals wonder why they agreed to go on it again.
The structure and the cabins
The wheel has 42 cabins. They are enclosed which is good news for anyone who does not enjoy the idea of wind in their face at a high altitude. Each cabin fits several people which makes it ideal for families, couples and that one friend who insists they are not afraid of heights but suddenly becomes very quiet at the top. The structure is made of steel and is designed to be assembled and disassembled which is ironic because it was supposed to be temporary and now refuses to leave.
How it compares to the London Eye
The London Eye is the celebrity of ferris wheels. It stands at 135 metres which makes the Budapest Eye look like its younger cousin who is still growing. The London Eye has 32 large capsules that each hold up to 25 people. They are basically moving living rooms. The Budapest Eye cabins are smaller and more modest but also less intimidating. The ticket price in London is famously high (about three times higher than in Budapest) which is part of the experience.
Other wheels around the world
The Singapore Flyer reaches 165 metres. The High Roller in Las Vegas goes even higher at 167 metres. These wheels are enormous and come with impressive engineering. They also come with ticket prices that make you question your financial decisions. Compared to them the Budapest Eye is a friendly neighbourhood wheel. It does not try to break records. It simply offers a pleasant view of the city without requiring a small loan.
The price of the ride
A ticket for the Budapest Eye is usually around the price of a decent lunch. It is not cheap but it is also not shocking. You pay for the view and for the gentle reminder that Budapest looks very good from above. The ride lasts long enough to take photos and to pretend you are not checking how high you are. It is a simple experience and that is part of its charm.
A wheel that knows its place
The Budapest Eye is not the tallest or the most famous. It does not need to be. It offers a 360 degree view of the city from a comfortable height. It stands in the middle of Erzsébet tér where life moves quickly around it. It is a wheel that knows its place and does not try to compete with the giants. It simply turns and gives people a reason to look at Budapest from a different angle.
