Budapest has one of the oldest and largest tram networks in the world? The first electric tram line in the city was inaugurated on 28 November 1887, only seven years after the world’s first one in Berlin. Since then, trams have been an integral part of Budapest’s urban landscape and culture, serving as a convenient and eco-friendly way of transportation.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Budapest’s unification in 2023, the city is hosting a variety of events and exhibitions, including a spectacular light show at the Lumina Park on the Margitsziget (Margaret Island). Here you can admire a replica of a historic tram, illuminated by thousands of LED lights, among other amazing installations. The Lumina Park is a magical place, especially in the evening, when the lights create a fairy-tale atmosphere.
The Lumina Park also pays tribute to the golden age of Budapest, when the city was a flourishing cultural and economic hub in the early 20th century. The tram reminds us of the corso, a popular social activity that involved strolling along the Danube promenade, admiring the views and the people. The corso was a symbol of the city’s elegance and cosmopolitanism, and a source of inspiration for many artists and writers.
