The Walferdange castle dates back to the early 19th century, when it was built as a stud farm by William I of the Netherlands, who was also Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Later, it became a royal residence for his son William II and his grandson Prince Henry, who was the governor of Luxembourg and a beloved figure among the locals. Prince Henry and his wife Amalia extended the castle and its gardens, and started a tradition of giving gifts to the children of Walferdange every Christmas.
After Prince Henry’s death in 1879, the castle was used for various purposes, such as a hospital, a teacher training college, an army barracks, and a pedagogical institute. Since 2003, it has been part of the University of Luxembourg, and since 2015, it has been used by the Ministry of National Education, Childhood and Youth.
During the Christmas season, the castle is adorned with beautiful lights and decorations that create a magical atmosphere.
