Volendam, The Netherlands is a picturesque village in the province of North Holland, famous for its fishing heritage, folk music, and traditional clothing. Kees Verkade (1941-2020) was specialised in modelling the human form, with an emphasis on movement and emotion. Most of his sculptures are set in bronze, but he also worked with clay, plaster, and wax. Verkade created over 230 sculptures in his career, ranging from small to life-size statues . 

His most famous works include the statue of Johan Cruyff at the Amsterdam Arena, the statue of Princess Grace of Monaco at the Princess Grace Rose Garden in Monaco, the statue of Anne Frank at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam or the statue of Charlie Chaplin at the Chaplin’s World museum in Switzerland.
