Welcome to Le Petit Poète
Le Petit Poète in Echternach is one of those places that sounds like it should be full of beret-wearing intellectuals sipping absinthe and debating existentialism. Instead, it’s a cosy hotel café where you’re more likely to find hikers devouring schnitzel and families arguing over who gets the room with the view.
A Historic Spot in Luxembourg’s Oldest Town
Nestled right in the centre of Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town, Le Petit Poète sits proudly on the market square. It’s been there since the 19th century, which means it’s seen more history than your average Netflix documentary. Back in the day, it was known as “Hotel de la Place” – not exactly poetic, but very literal. The name change was clearly an upgrade.
The Building with Character (and Possibly Creaky Floors)
The building itself is charming in that slightly crooked. It’s surrounded by historic gems like the basilica, the former Benedictine abbey, and the Denzelt – a building that sounds like a sneeze but is actually one of the most important landmarks in town. If walls could talk, these ones would probably complain about tourists and ask for a fresh coat of paint.
Inside the Hotel: Simple, Clean, and Surprisingly Modern
Inside, the hotel has been modernised just enough to keep you comfortable without losing its rustic soul. The rooms are clean, simple, and some even offer views of the square. There’s WiFi, of course, because even poets need to check their emails.
The Café: Where Schnitzel Meets Portugal
The café and restaurant are open daily, which is a blessing for anyone who’s ever tried to find food in a small town after 8pm. The menu is a mix of Luxembourgish, French, and Portuguese dishes. Yes, Portuguese, rather typical for Luxembourg. The daily menu from Monday to Friday is a hit with hikers who’ve just conquered the Mullerthal Trail and need carbs more than poetry.
A Base for Exploring and Daydreaming
Speaking of trails, Le Petit Poète is a great base for exploring the surrounding area, known as “Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland.” It’s got cliffs, forests, and enough scenic views to make your Instagram followers jealous. The lake is just a short walk away, and there’s even a free city bus if your legs have given up.
Stories and Whispers from the Past
As for interesting stories, well, there’s a rumour that the place is haunted by the ghost of a poet who never got published. Okay, that’s not true, but it would explain the name. In reality, the hotel has hosted generations of travellers, each leaving behind a bit of their own story – some romantic, some tragic, and probably a few involving too much wine.
