This beautiful geranium decorates a carefully preserved garden in Hungary, near Budapest.
Geraniums are a much-loved garden plant, but did you know that they are not actually geraniums?
Their official name is pelargonium, and they are native to South Africa.
The name geranium comes from a mistake made by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in 1753, who classified them as part of the Geranium genus. Pelargoniums have more than 250 species, and some of them have scented leaves that can smell like rose, citrus, or mint.
While in Austria and Germany, it is more typical to put this decorative flower on the window banks, in the Hungarian summer heat they require more care and protection.
They need plenty of sunlight, well-drained soil, and regular watering. They also attract butterflies and hummingbirds with their vibrant colors and nectar-rich flowers.
