The bridge of Avignon is a half bridge. It has a long and fascinating history. It was built between 1177 and 1185 with 22 stone arches spanning the Rhône river.
It was part of a major pilgrimage route and a link between the papal court in Avignon and the cardinals’ residences in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.
However, the bridge suffered from frequent floods and collapses, and was eventually abandoned in the 17th century.
Today, only four arches and a chapel remain, as well as a famous song that celebrates its charm.
