Palais Schönborn-Batthyány is a Baroque palace in the heart of Vienna, Austria.
It was built between 1699 and 1706 for count Adam Batthyány whose family had very close links with the Hungarian history. In 1740, the residence was sold to the noble Schönborn family. After this transfer, the interior of the palace was redecorated, an impressing art collection was transferred there including Rembrandt’s The Blinding of Samson. The building was housing a rich library of 18,000 volumes.
In the early 20th century most of the art collection was sold. During the Second World War, the building was damaged, however renovated until 1960.
Today the palace is still the residence of the Austrian branch of the Schönborn family’s, but partially rented out to other occupants.
History in Vienna is on my photo of the day.
